Skype has announced some major advances for the consumer in video calling - with high-definition pictures enabled and integration with TV sets. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, it is unveiling partnerships with LG and Panasonic to offer Skype-enabled HDTVs from the middle of this year.
In today's world, music is omnipresent. It has swept into all aspects of our lives, be it TV, movies, shopping malls, public toilets, ringtones or waiting loops. Yet we still crave more. Music stimulates the brain. It's this deep rooted cultural pleasure that drives us to consume more and more of it. Note that some, like Amazon are exclusively for the USA market.
Neotel are doing a great job for telecommunications in South Africa, absolutely no question about it. Let us compare the cost of an ADSL line from Telkom - include the ISP (whether it be Telkom or another) to offerings available from Neotel.
Afrihost has a limited offer of R29 per GB of bandwidth used per month. Further topup is also charged at R29 per GB. This saving is just too good not to talk about it, we have been on this service for the last month and have not noticed any drop in the performance or service from our previous provider.
Fraudsters have been emailing the general South African public with requests to confirm their banking details, so that the SARS refund can be deposited into their bank account. Do not follow the links on this email and rather delete the message.
A great photograph is one that captures the moment. A good photograph is not only about high resolution or huge amounts of detail. Some digital cameras today provide the ability to enlarge detail from great distances. Many great photographers of the past never had access to that kind of equipment. A simple cell-phone camera is able to takes quality pictures.
A lot of us have ADSL at home, and most of us that have ADSL routers, have wireless network connectivity. Remember how easy it was to connect to the wireless router when it was first installed? Well here is the wake up call. The easier it was for you to connect, the easier it is for people outside your house to connect to the same wireless router. Maybe you can trust your neighbour, but do you know the kids or the kid's friends well enough to know they will not try to hack into your network, or just use your bandwidth? These tips from About.Com are very good, and even if you don't know how to make these changes, I would suggest you get your computer consultant to come in and make the changes for you.
If something seems too good to be true, goes the old saying, it IS too good to be true. The new high-end in USB flash drives, the 32GB version, with enough capacity to back up most typical users’ entire data build-up, typically retails at anywhere from $75 to $150 in the USA, and around R1 000 to R2 000 in South Africa. But now you can pick one up for R350 ($40) or less, depending how close you get to the source. One small problem: while they look, feel and present themselves to your computer as 32GB drives, they are in fact 1GB drives, partitioned to mimic 32GB drives. (Beware there are also fake 64Gb flash drives doing the rounds - from my reading they say to check the engraving on the metal connector, the real deal has engraving, the fake not. My advice would be to buy from a reputable vendor, so that it can be returned. - Editor Tech4Law)
If you're tired of battling mouse and keyboard cables, or if your cables aren't long enough to connect your keyboard and screen to your CPU on the floor, you might want to consider the wireless keyboard and mouse from Microsoft at around R600.
When looking at HDTVs, you may have noticed that the contrasts on the devices range from "2000:1" to "35 000:1". Rather easy to choose you may think, but not really, and this is why.
Saving electricity is becoming a national priority. Getting to grips with exactly how much power you are using at home and what your appliances consume is, however, a different matter. That's why Eskom have devised the "on-line residential energy auditor", an easy to use tool that helps you work out how much electricity you are using, what you should be paying, and how to save on each category.

The SKYPE Internet phone service is far and away the fastest growing "FREE" means of voice and video communication on the "world wide web". The proprietary software that SKYPE has developed for voice communications is technically amazing and it seems in a league of its own.

I am always surprised at how many people haven’t yet heard about Skype. I don’t use it that often, but I have still saved thousands of Rand by making free or cheap Skype calls. Now I don’t profess to be an expert on Skype, so what I will do in this article is to give you an introduction to its basic features.
For years I purchased a licence for antivirus software to use on my home computer. Licensing was always a nightmare, and even for home use, the software was quite expensive. And that wasn’t the worst of it – the old antivirus software ate up a chunk of my system’s resources.
