Conveyancers use Firefly to increase instructions from Estate Agents

PDF Print E-mail

firefly_logoProgressive attorneys throughout South Africa are arming their Estate Agent clients with the Firefly costs calculator from Avid Software. "Now that smartphones have become ubiquitous in South Africa, virtually any Estate Agent can run Firefly," said Barry Swart, CEO of Avid Software.

Firefly provides calculators for bond costs, a monthly bond installment, bond affordability, agent commission, price per square metre, and capital gains tax - all on the Agent's cell phone.

A number of South African law firms have given a firm-branded version of Firefly to their agents. Typically the law firm installs Firefly for the agents and provides a short training course on its functions. "This provides a great opportunity for the firm to strengthen its relationship with its Estate Agent clients, and the firm logo continues to market the firm each time the agent performs a calculation," added Swart.

You can read more about Firefly here, and law firms who are interested should contact barry@amn.co.za or call Barry on 021 8829236.

@Meyer - thanks for the input, always good to hear from people who are using the software as this is the real proof of a system.
@Chris - I had no idea that this was the case, I have always heard that Estate Agents "recommend" conveyancers. I always have thought that the LSSA should be assisting conveyancers in SA to promote their services to the man on the street. Leaving this to the individual legal firm is too costly, as the audience is huge, but a country-wide campaign by the LSSA would be huge.
This is a little off topic, but a good point.

Rather than encouraging agents and attorneys to foster relationships, sellers should be encouraged to be the instructing party to the conveyancing practice in all property transactions. The conveyancer should act solely for and on instructions of the seller and the agent's interest should not cloud the issue.That is why Rule 7 of the Code of Conduct for Estate Agents should be promoted:
7. Prohibition against undue influence:

No estate agent shall without good and sufficient cause, directly or indirectly, in any manner whatsoever, solicit, encourage, persuade or influence any party or potential party to a pending or a completed transaction to utilise or refrain from utilising:

7.1 the services of any particular attorney, conveyancer or firm of attorneys;

7.2 the services or financial assistance offered by any financial institution to members of the public in general; or

7.3 the financial assistance offered to such party by any person.

My firm and myself uses Avid firefly every day as it is a very handy tool. I use it on my mobile phone and laptop or PC. It save me time and within 30 seconds or less I am able to calculate transfer costs [with an entire breakdown], bond registrations costs, agent's comm and many more.I even calculate earlier bond repayments for clients on my mobile phone. The clients and agents are impressed with our professional service. Meyer de Waal
