How to get Special Characters in your documents or email

special_charsOften when using Microsoft Word or email, one wants to insert a "Special Character" or "Alt" character as they are sometimes called - these codes insert the special character into the document - for example "ê" or "♥". In this article we will give you the table of the special character codes.

To enter one of these characters into your workspace, hold down your "Alt" key while using the Numeric Pad numbers to type in the code - if you use a notebook make sure you also press the function key at the same time to get the Numeric Pad.

Good comment - any idea where I can find the table on the four digit codes?

On the Notebooks - or should I say most notebooks - the numbers you have to use must be the "Numeric keypad" those are normally in blue and are located around the "j, K and L" keys. So you have to hold in the "Fn" and the "Alt" keys while pressing the keys around the "J, K and L" area.

For the BlackBerry devices, let me check with them and see what I can find.

Hi Malcolm. The special characters table was most useful. Just a word of caution though. Sometimes the software that one is using may interpret the "Alt plus number" combination in some surprising ways, like kick you out of the document It does help to know that there are alternatives to some of the characters. For example, Alt + 129 will give you ü but you get the same result with Alt + 0252. [I find the latter combination more robust and less likely to do "funny things" in the software]. Cheers, Sieg

Tried to type special charcters from the table on my Toshiba L40 notebook and my Blackberry but it does NOT work.... but does work on a normal computer!
