Dear Legal Practitioners and Candidate Legal Practitioners,
The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has published the Legal Practice Amendment Bill, 2026 for public comment in Government Gazette No. 55166, dated 7 August 2026.
The Bill proposes amendments to various provisions of the Legal Practice Act 28 of 2014. Legal practitioners and other interested stakeholders are therefore encouraged to review the attached Bill and Government Gazette notice and submit their written comments directly to the Department.
The closing date for the submission of comments is Friday, 11 September 2026.
Comments submitted by email must be marked for the attention of Ms F Bhayat and sent to FBhayat@justice.gov.za. The postal and hand-delivery details for submissions are contained in the attached Government Gazette notice.
Important: Comments must not be submitted to the Legal Practice Council. The Council is circulating the Bill and Government Gazette notice solely for the purpose of informing the profession. All comments must be submitted directly to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development in accordance with the Government Gazette notice.
