Over the past few days, we’ve seen a good few things shift in the legal AI space.
The conversation is no longer really about whether lawyers are going to use AI. That battle has largely been won. The more interesting question now is what happens to the legal profession when AI becomes part of the everyday legal workforce?
We’re seeing AI move deeper into legal firms, from research and drafting to client advice, document production and increasingly sophisticated legal workflows. At the same time, clients are becoming more sophisticated about AI themselves, and some are beginning to ask a very uncomfortable question: why are we paying a law firm to do work that AI can increasingly do?
That creates some interesting tension. Lawyers are being encouraged to embrace AI for productivity, while simultaneously being reminded that they remain responsible for everything that goes out the door. And as AI-generated work becomes easier to identify, questions around transparency, confidentiality, professional responsibility and even evidence are becoming much harder to ignore.
We’re also seeing the beginnings of something bigger: new regulatory thinking, new roles for lawyers, and new approaches to how legal services might actually be delivered.
