Jonathan Dingle (Senior Barrister, International Arbitrator and Mediator) will be returning to South Africa to present this popular and excellent training from the 2nd October to the 6th Octover 2017.
As part of the Government’s commitment to transforming and improving access to civil justice, The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development implemented Court-Annexed Mediation into courts across the country as of December 2014. In preparation for these changes and to further the cause of mediation as an efficient and cost-effective alternative form of dispute resolution, the Association of Arbitrators (Southern Africa) NPC (AoA) sought to forge a relationship with an experienced, internationally accredited, mediation training provider in order to bring the very best in accredited mediation training to it’s members and to Africa. Meeting with Jonathan Dingle and his team from 218 Strand London, the AoA were impressed with both the breadth of knowledge and experience as well as the passion for the subject. A bespoke course was developed and several successful courses have taken place in both Johannesburg and Cape Town during 2014, 2015 and 2016. Plans for 2017 see these courses being extended across Africa. With the growth of trade, and increasing use of mediation internationally, those professionals who have trained as mediators to the common International standard will likely be in high demand both as pioneers and as mentors going forward. This opportunity should not be missed.
Why train with 218 Strand and the AoA?
The faculty at 218 Strand is passionate about mediation and its role in business, for the workplace, in commercial, construction and insurance disputes, medical matters, the community, property, employment and human rights. We provide training globally and, in addition to South Africa, our faculty can name Spain, Brussels, India and the Caribbean as recent destinations with Dubai, Singapore and Tokyo planned for the future. We work with Governments, Businesses and Law Firms around the world to develop and promote mediation. These include the NHS in the UK, The European Parliament, Bahamas Chamber of Commerce, The Sierra Leone Bar Association and the Indian Ministry of Justice. The leading text book on the subject, The Mediation Handbook, was written by Course Leader Jonathan Dingle and is now in it’s 2nd edition. We believe that the level of interaction should be as high as possible and so we have balanced the need for teaching with considerable emphasis on the practical side of matters. Our trainers are practicing mediators and so are always up to date with current practice and have a firm eye on the required skill sets which we ensure you develop during your training. The course in structured in a way that provides total immersion in the mediation process. The week includes over the 40 hours of contact time, including demonstrations and role play exercises as well as traditional teaching. It concludes with an examination and assessment of candidates.
Successful completion results in certification as an accredited Mediator (QDR, ie. Qualified Dispute Resolver (Mediator)). Feedback from our courses, from judges to florists, police officers to politicians, is exceptional and we are proud of the life-long relationships we build with our alumni and the benefits they can bring to the communities which they serve.
Who should attend?
Our courses are not just for lawyers – in fact usually 50% of places are taken by non-lawyers. They are for people keen to learn the skills of mediation and apply them effectively anywhere in the civil or commercial context, around the world. Our policy is one of inclusion and diversity with career-long support – if you are committed to the process then you will find we are too. There is no age limit, high or low, the course is skill based and builds on all the experience of the varied participants. All you need is an interest in people and, in assisting individuals, groups and organisations, find solutions which may appear intractable.
