Microsoft price pain in South Africa

South Africans who can no longer afford or have grown tired of the price increases on Microsoft Office’s subscription-based variant, Microsoft 365, have a myriad of free alternative productivity suites to choose from.

MyBroadband recently analysed local pricing adjustments on Microsoft 365 Personal and Family and found that prices had increased by over 165% in the past 12 years.

Effective mid-January 2025 for new subscribers and 8 March 2025 for existing users, the price of Microsoft 365 Personal is R159 per month, while the Family plan costs R199 per month.

Although Microsoft is offering Classic variants without its new AI capabilities at the previous price points, these will only be available for a limited period. Fortunately, productivity software is in no short supply.
