It’s been a roller coaster six month period in the world of cryptocurrencies. Prices have boomed, then fallen, and millions more people have become aware of the new potential, and pitfalls, of the technology which is moving ever closer to the mainstream.
It’s also been six months since Cape Crypto launched in Cape Town, South Africa. The company has been hard at work building a new service geared at the South African market, and now they are thrilled to announce the release of their Android app, and there are a few more services dropping in the next couple of weeks as well.

The new app is simple, clean and robust. The focus has been on the essentials, and making it easy for anyone to sign up and start buying Bitcoin. ‘We wanted to ensure we got to market as soon as possible,’ says CEO and founder Leon Kowalski, ‘and that’s why we have prioritised Android first as we have seen the majority of our customers use Android devices. But our iOS app release will be following in the next few weeks, as well as Biometrics to make things even more simple and easy.
Kowalski is well known in the local crypto community from his time as a product manager at Luno, the biggest crypto exchange in the country. But he has been working at the cutting edge of technology and startups for over fifteen years in a variety of roles.
After his years at Luno, he realised there was still a lot of space for a ‘proudly South African’, locally owned and focused crypto company. It seems that faith has been rewarded by the news that the young company is already handling over R100 million in monthly volume.
There is a massive optimism in the industry and Cape Crypto is looking forward to growing fast and empowering South Africans of all shapes and sizes to take charge of their financial futures and have a stake in the future of currency.
