legal secretary salary survey 2015As a legal secretary, how do you know you are being paid a fair wage? And for a law firm, how do you know where you rank on the fair average salary for your secretaries? The answer is simple really…

Find out what the average salary is for a certain skill set in your region.

As far as I know there is no place that has a legal secretary (forgive me for not including legal paralegal every time, but accept that when I say legal secretary, I am referring to all legal secretarial staff) salary guide, per skill set and per region – other than the survey Tech4Law did in 2010.

So, we launched a new survey last year for everyone to find out what the average salaries were per region and per skill set. This time we kept it anonymous, to get a better response. Ten questions with a one mouse click answer and a security code at the end – what could be simpler.

As much as these surveys are perceived as being biased towards the staff, they do in fact assist the law firms a great deal in looking after their staff better by knowing the going salaries. You see the salaries vary so much in law firms, due to skills, area of practice, regions and volume throughput that it is it extremely difficult to work out the correct salaries from a thumb suck and a record of salaries in the past. Other industries are lucky as they have a single job description for their secretary staff – which may have very few differencing factors – a law firm right off the bat starts with the various areas of legal practice, before we get to the other aspects of differentiation.

I believe every single legal secretary should take this survey, if not driven on their own will to improve their profession, then by insistance of the managing partner at the law firm, as it will then allow everyone to refer to concrete evidence of what the salaries should be.

Take the survey now, enough hoping that others will do it for you. Surely you are not going to leave your future salary in somebody else’s hands…

By the way, MyWage.co.za says the average salary for a legal secretary with 10 years’ experience is R10 300 per month CostToCompany.
