Harvey AI at ENS

African law firm, ENS, is continuing its commitment to legal innovation with the firmwide adoption of Harvey AI, a cutting-edge artificial intelligence platform designed to enhance legal analysis, streamline workflows and unlock new possibilities for strategic legal thinking.

While the legal industry has traditionally been slow to embrace new technologies, ENS views this shift as an opportunity rather than a challenge. Our adoption of Harvey marks another significant step in our ongoing commitment to embracing technology for smart and efficient solutions for clients. In 2022, we were the first law firm on the African continent to implement RelativityOne, an industry-leading e-discovery solution that offers a seamless digital way to preserve, collect, identify, analyse and produce data.

AI meets human expertise

The legal profession has long relied on the deep expertise, nuanced analysis, and strategic thinking of experienced legal practitioners. ENS believes AI has the capacity to enhance these strengths, not replace them. Harvey will automate time-consuming legal research and document review, allowing ENS lawyers to focus on what is truly impactful: innovative advisory work, creative problem-solving, delivering outstanding outcomes for clients and exceptional client service.

According to ENS CE, Mzi Mgudlwa, “AI is not replacing the human touch: it’s complementing it. By adopting Harvey AI, we are giving our clients an even greater advantage, blending the distinctly human expertise of our legal professionals with cutting-edge generative AI technology to deliver smarter, more impactful legal solutions.”

State of the art security and data protection

Security and data protection are at the heart of Harvey’s design. Harvey employs rigorous security measures to protect the confidentiality and integrity of client data. Hosted on Microsoft Azure, Harvey benefits from Microsoft’s best-in-class security features, including physical security measures at data centres. Harvey does not use ENS inputs, outputs or any information ENS uploads into the platform for training. Furthermore, Harvey has strict data segregation and controls in place, so no client data or work product will be used or usable for other client matters.

A future-ready approach to law

ENS prides itself on its original thinking, solution focus and legal innovation in Africa. The adoption of Harvey AI across ENS’ business is yet another manifestation of embracing technology, digital transformation, and new ways of working to stay ahead of the curve.

With AI transforming industries at an unprecedented pace, ENS is demonstrating that the legal sector does not have to lag behind, it can be a driver of change.
