Leading content and technology solutions provider, LexisNexis South Africa, marked its 80th year of operation in the country this year with a spate of new technology platforms that have strengthened its position as a digital innovator in the regulatory content industry.
Launched in 1934 as the local arm of British print publishing house, Butterworths, the company’s evolution has seen it diversify into professional workflow solutions aimed at keeping clients on top of changing technological, regulatory and competitive environments.
“Technology and customer needs are changing on a daily basis and we have the ability to make a difference in the markets we serve by providing easy access to information and supporting this with tools that make compliance easier, thereby fulfilling our common purpose of upholding the rule of law,” says Chief Executive Officer, Billy Last.
Last says it is “a very different ball game” compared to 1934, when Mr K Sheppard was transferred from Butterworths in the United Kingdom to establish and manage a sales operation in Durban, which became Butterworths’ SA. The company recently launched its ‘What’s Next’ marketing campaign to showcase some of the content innovations it has introduced to market.
“Today we are using technology to complement our traditional print offerings with sophisticated, yet simple to use online research tools, digital libraries and mobile solutions that provide answers in increasingly complex environments,” says Last.
“Our aim is to help end users access information quickly and efficiently, enabling them to make accurate decisions and maintain their competitive edge,” he adds.
LexisNexis aims to provide software solutions that deliver valuable outputs for businesses of all sizes and structures, particularly in the corporate, legal, tax and accounting, public and academic sectors.
Among its recent innovations is the new LexisMobile ® app, which enables legal and tax practitioners to access their entire legal loose-leaf library on-the-go and at the tap of a finger. There is also Practical Guidance, a web-based solution (the first of its kind in South Africa) that provides online access to practical aids and up-to-date topical information on a range of legal and corporate subject matter. Other tailor-made legal solutions include the Legal Select online offering that allows users to fashion their own legal research library according to their needs.
LexisNexis South Africa has made wireless technology available at courts across South Africa and also introduced a digital self help kiosk concept for legal practitioners to access technology-enabled legal information easily at South African courts.
Having already entrenched its leading position in the field of legal solutions, LexisNexis views risk and compliance as the big growth area where its solutions can help organisations manage their risk and keep track of changes in the regulatory environment.
Among these are: ProcureCheck, which helps clients uphold the integrity and credibility of their supply chain management processes; RefCheck Advanced, which provides recruitment agencies and employers with a pre-employment screening solution; DeedSearch which makes public record information more easily accessible and the LegalEasy 2.0 mobile app, which provides access to compliance policy and procedures for continuous improvement.
“It’s not just ‘paper behind glass’,” says Last. “We are developing innovative e-solutions that can now be accessed via iPads and mobile phones.”
Going forward the market can expect to see more digital and mobile content workflow solutions from LexisNexis South Africa, in line with fast changing technological developments and the ever-changing regulatory and socio-economic environment.
