Free SMSs in South Africa have been a long time coming. UCT chemical engineering student Daniel Schwartzkopff has brought this service to South Africans on both computers and cellular phones.
Register on the web site www.fsms.co.za (Site no longer exists) and you are ready to start sending a maximum of 20 free SMSs per day.
The SMS that you send will have a short advert on it, just like the “Please call me” messages, this is obviously where they are going to be able to make their money – quite expected really. From the reports I have seen it looks like this has started off with a bang; let’s hope they get advertisers to keep them going.
My testing of the system did not raise any suspicions or faults with messages being delivered as quickly as my regular paid for service. Thank you to Sieg Heiriss for spotting this service.
