Co Za Domain Registry

As you may be aware, local and international data protection laws and/or regulations [EU General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and Protection of Personal Information Act 26 of 2013 (POPI)] is currently in effect to govern the way in which personal information is collected, processed and/or stored by public and private bodies.

The rationale for such laws is obvious: to protect data identifiers (name, email, address, telephone number etc) of natural and in some cases juristic persons against abusive practices, such as, identify theft; to give effect to constitutional imperatives; and to provide persons with remedies to protect their personal information.

Within the ZA Central Registry’s (ZACR) existing Legacy Whois database (http://co.za/whois.shtml) the following information was previously displayed due to compliance with .ZA General SLD Charter Requirements.

With the standardised practice of ICANN and other ccTLD Registries redacting their Whois data to remain compliant with privacy laws, the ZACR will be implementing the following changes on 3 September 2019 to its Legacy Whois service:

  • All corresponding output of all fields above marked with a asterisk (*) will be adjusted to “REDACTED FOR PRIVACY PROTECTION”.
  • All other fields will remain visible to the public.

We hope that as a collective we can take positive steps towards complying with legal, regulatory and policy directives relating to data protection within an environment that balances the privacy rights of its clients whilst simultaneously maintaining our individual abilities to pursue our strategic and business goals in a seamless manner.

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require any further assistance or clarifications by emailing dp@registry.net.za.

We thank you for your continued cooperation and collaboration.
