How often are you typing along merrily, and a special character stops you in your tracks! What now!!!
Panic… Google search to find a word with the special character, then copy and paste, remove the formatting and 3 minutes later you are on your way again.
Let us start with tackling a few popular special characters and each week we can add a few more to the mix, hopefully assisting us all handling them more efficiently.
Circumflex character: â, ê, î, ô, or û – (Afrikaans kappie)
for example: sê mê hê rûe brûe bêre môre skêr êrens nêrens wêreld kêrel pêrel blêr
Windows MS Word
Press and hold SHIFT + 6
Press A, E, I, O or U (the letter you want to add a deelteken to)
Mac MS Word
Press and hold Option/Alt + I
Press A, E, I, O, or U (the letter you want to add a kappie to)
Umlaut accent: ä, ë, ï, ö, or ü – (Afrikaans deelteken)
for example: breë leë vlieë knieë droë oë hoë
